paṭhana-pāṭhana yajana-yājana dāna-pratigraha.
A brāhmaṇa should be very learned; he should teach others also Vedic knowledge, paṭhana-pāṭhana. Yajana-yājana. He must be a devotee, and he should teach others also how to worship. Yajana-yājana. Dāna-pratigraha. He will accept charity from others, and he will give in charity again to others. These are the six occupations of a brāhmaṇa.
Sukracharya was teaching something and not following the same teachings. Seeing his guru’s duplicity, Bali Maharaj gave up his instructions and association with his guru. Although it is a great sin to reject one’s guru, Maharaj Bali decided to abide by dharma and proceeded to give the charity.
The brahmana then expanded, and his small form became a huge form. His first step covered the entire hellish planets, and his second step covered the entire heavenly planets that previously belonged to Bali Maharaj.
Then the lord asked, “ Where should I put my third feet?”
Maharaj Bali, being humbled and amazed by the magnanimous activities of the lord, put his head forward to offer the lord as his only possession where he could place his lotus feet.
Lord Vamana was extremely satisfied by Bali Maharaj’s humility and surrender and decided to reciprocate by becoming his doorkeeper in the hellish planets.
