“Feeding the poor means feeding Narayana” and many more delusional statements people make about giving donations.

A lot of Hindus make donations the wrong way, and they aren’t aware of it, and this misinformation makes them donate to the wrong people.

Here’s a guide that will take you through the scriptures to explain the right meaning of charity and how to actually perform one.

What Is The True Meaning Of Charity?

Charity (Dāna) in Hinduism means giving with compassion, sincerity, and without expecting anything in return, making it an offering to God.
It includes donating wealth, feeding the hungry, sharing knowledge, and helping those in need. True donation is measured by the intention behind giving, not the amount donated.

What Do Hindu Scriptures Say?

The Bhagavad Gita (17.20) says,

dātavyam iti yad dānaṁ

dīyate ’nupakāriṇe

deśe kāle ca pātre ca

tad dānaṁ sāttvikaṁ smṛtam

Meaning: Charity given as a duty, to a worthy recipient, at the right time and place, without expecting anything in return, is considered sattvic —the purest form of giving.

2. Bhagavad Gita (16.1–3)

The Bhagavad Gita identifies dāna as a divine quality, alongside compassion, self-control, and truthfulness.

3. Taittiriya Upanishad (1.11.3)

“Śraddhayā deyam, aśraddhayā adeyam.”

Meaning: Give with faith and sincerity; giving should not be careless or without respect.

Who is a Real Brahman who qualifies To Take Charity?

A Brahmana, according to Shastra, has to

(1) Study the scriptures
(2) Teach the scriptures
(3) Offer Yajna
(4) Officiate a Yajna
(5) Accept Gifts
(6) Offer Gifts.

A brahmana is he who performs the above-mentioned duties,

In the Sanatana Dharma scriptures, a Brahmana’s responsibilities include studying and teaching sacred knowledge, performing and guiding religious ceremonies, and cultivating spiritual wisdom. Donations are not merely a Brahmana’s duty; they are a virtue encouraged for everyone, according to their means and circumstances.

How To Perform Charity According To Shastras?

According to Hindu Shastras, (Dāna) should be offered to the rightfully practicing Brahmanas with faith, respect, and a pure intention.

1. Give to the Needy: Donate food, clothes, and essential supplies to poor families, hungry people, and those facing hardship.

2. Support Brahmanas and Spiritual Teachers: Offer food, clothes, or dakshina to qualified Brahmanas and teachers who sincerely study and share scriptural knowledge.

3. Feed Cows and Support Their Care: Provide fodder or contribute to the care of cows through responsible shelters.

4. Support Students: Donate books, educational supplies, or financial assistance to students who cannot afford their education.

5. Practise Annadana: Offer freshly prepared food with respect to hungry people and those in need.

6. Give at the Right Time and Place: According to Bhagavad Gita 17.20, dana should be given at an appropriate time and place, to a worthy recipient, without expecting anything in return.

And in the absence of a pure and pious brahmana, the holy mother cow should be fed and taken care of.

Please note: Whatever you give, it must be given with respect and faith. The Taittiriya Upanishad (1.11.3) teaches,

 “Śraddhayā deyam”

  • Give with faith and sincerity.

Remember: Hindu scriptures emphasize not only whom you give to, but also how you give. Donations should be offered respectfully, according to your capacity, without the false ego of having resources to perform dana. The recipient must also not be seeking personal recognition.

What Is The Biggest Charity In This Age Of Kaliyuga?

According to Vaishnava tradition, the greatest charity in the age of Kali Yuga is sharing the Holy Names of Lord Krishna and spreading spiritual knowledge. The Brihan-naradiya Purana (often cited at 38.126) states:

“Harer nāma harer nāma

 harer nāmaiva kevalam

kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva nāsty eva

gatir anyathā.”

Meaning: In this age of Kali, chanting the Holy Name of the Lord is the most effective means of spiritual progress.
